How NexGen Achieved CMMC Level 2 Compliance to Unlock Defense Contract Opportunities

Riveron helped NexGen complete a clean CMMC Level 2 assessment in six months, strengthening cybersecurity, building internal expertise, and positioning the company to pursue new Department of Defense contracting opportunities.

NexGen Technologies provides IT modernization services for federal defense and civilian agencies. As NexGen pursued additional Department of Defense (DoD) contracts, meeting stringent cybersecurity requirements became essential to its growth strategy.

With Riveron’s support, NexGen established a secure environment for handling Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI), strengthened its cybersecurity program, and completed a clean CMMC Level 2 assessment. Riveron completed the initiative in six months, compared with NexGen’s initial two-year estimate, building a cybersecurity foundation to support its expansion into defense contracting.

Challenges

Meeting defense cybersecurity requirements

Expanding into DoD contracting required NexGen to satisfy rigorous cybersecurity requirements, including NIST SP 800-171 and CMMC Level 2.

“We did not have a fully segregated and hardened environment, nor the detailed and official policies in place to prove compliance,” said Steve Lute, Director of Operations at NexGen.

NexGen needed to establish a secure environment for CUI and develop the policies and supporting evidence to demonstrate that its controls were in place and operating effectively. With limited internal resources and an estimated two-year timeline, NexGen needed a partner capable of translating complex federal requirements into practical safeguards without disrupting existing operations.

How we helped

Hands-on cybersecurity expertise and implementation

The team developed a phased compliance roadmap, providing technical guidance and configuration playbooks to establish a hardened environment for securely handling CUI. Building on NexGen’s existing investment in Drata, the approach minimized changes to existing infrastructure while strengthening security controls and governance practices.

Riveron cybersecurity experts operated as an extension of NexGen’s team, providing hands-on support, resolving technical challenges, and transferring knowledge to internal personnel. This combination of implementation support and knowledge transfer helped NexGen prepare for the assessment while equipping its team to manage the environment over time.

“They were fully engaged as if they were a member of NexGen,” said Lute, who credited Riveron engagement lead Jorge Tardiff for his technical expertise and mentorship.

“Federal cybersecurity compliance requires more than documented policies. Our focus was helping NexGen implement durable security controls, navigate technical challenges, and build the internal expertise needed to sustain compliance,” said Andrew Escobedo, Head of Federal Services in Riveron’s Cybersecurity Advisory practice.

Results

Stronger security and new defense contract opportunities

With Riveron’s support, NexGen achieved a perfect score of 110/110 on its CMMC Level 2 assessment, finishing the initiative in one-quarter of the originally estimated time. The engagement strengthened assessment readiness, cybersecurity, and NexGen’s internal capability to maintain compliance.  Key outcomes included:

  • Clean assessment: Successfully completed its CMMC Level 2 assessment with no reported negative findings.
  • 4x faster implementation: Completed the initiative in six months compared with the initial two-year estimate.
  • Stronger cybersecurity: Established a hardened cloud environment capable of securely handling CUI.
  • Lasting internal expertise: Equipped personnel to independently maintain security controls and compliance processes.
  • Expanded contracting opportunities: According to Lute, the certification “opens up at least 100 new opportunities each year,” expanding NexGen’s potential defense contracting pipeline.
For NexGen, the engagement went beyond achieving compliance.
As Lute explained, Riveron is a partner that “doesn’t just get you a certificate for you to post,” but instead helps “create and entrench secure policies, processes and environments within your organization.”

The result is a lasting cybersecurity foundation that enables NexGen to confidently pursue new defense contracts. With a secure environment and an internal team equipped to maintain it, NexGen now has a stronger ability to pursue new defense contracts and support its growth strategy.
